Dear Editor,
Groube Award
I am delighted to read John Coster's article in the latest issue of the creation of this award. However I note that there was no acknowledgement that this was not the first anthropological award named in Les's honour. In a fieldbook come scrapbook I kept in the 1960's I have the following clipping:
"We didn't tell you about the Les Groube Hair Style Contest for Anthropologists did we? There was only one contestant, the award being duly presented."
My notes there indicate it was from The Critic (the Otago University student paper) and give the date of 1966. Reference to the photograph accompanying John's article of Les at Waioneke, will give credence to creation of this prior award.
I visited Dunedin from Christchurch over Easter 1966 to attend the national university Easter tournament, (my contributions to the same were entirely social) and spent one day at the Mapoutahi excavation Les was running (S 164/13, Anderson and Sutton 1973). It is probable I collected the cutting on the same visit.
